Donut Friday

Darren C. Demaree

There is flame in joy.
We will weep because of the ash,
but right now, right now

we are the lords of our own
bleeding. The blood in us
has no where to go.

The blood in us is bouncing
around in celebration
of the sugar in our choices.

We don’t sit quietly.
We don’t eat quietly.
We leave crumbs.

He asked if we could bring donuts
to everybody in Ohio. I said no,
but that was the wrong answer.
